The Festivals of Grant County: Why We Actually Love Living Here

People sometimes assume small counties don’t have much going on. We smile when we hear that. Because if you’ve spent even one full year in Grant County, you know — this place knows how to gather.

Not in a flashy, big-city way. In a meaningful, community-driven, “see you there next year” kind of way.

Here’s what a year really feels like around here.

Spring: We Start Waking Up

As soon as the weather shifts, so does the energy. You can feel it. People start getting outside. Downtown areas begin buzzing again. Local events slowly fill the calendar, and then the farmers markets come back.

Farmers Markets: Where the Season Really Begins

There’s something about walking through a farmers market that just feels right.

Fresh produce. Homemade baked goods. Local honey. Handmade soaps. Flowers that still smell like sunshine.

You’re not just buying food — you’re meeting the person who grew it. You’re talking to the baker. You’re running into people you know.

It’s slow in the best way.

Marion and surrounding communities host markets throughout the warmer months, and they become part of the rhythm of summer. Coffee in hand. Kids sampling strawberries. Neighbors catching up.

It’s not fancy.

It’s real.

First Fridays: Downtown Comes Alive

When First Fridays roll around, you feel it before you even get there.

In Marion, the square fills up. Food trucks line the streets. Shops stay open late. Music floats through downtown. Families wander from vendor to vendor. You’ll run into at least three people you didn’t plan to see.

It feels alive — but still comfortable.

In Gas City, First Fridays bring that small-town pride front and center. It’s relaxed. Welcoming. You can tell the community supports it because they show up.

And then there are the Concerts in the Park in Gas City.

Bring a lawn chair. Maybe a blanket. Sit under the evening sky while live music plays. Kids run around. Parents exhale. It’s simple, but it sticks with you.

Those summer nights are the ones you remember.

The Grant County Fair: Tradition That Still Works

When fair week hits, it’s like the whole county knows.

Carnival rides. Livestock shows. Food you only eat once a year. Generations walking the fairgrounds together.

Van Buren Popcorn Festival: Small Town, Big Turnout

If you’ve ever been to the Popcorn Festival, you know it’s more than popcorn. It’s parades, music, food booths, kids activities — and a whole lot of hometown pride. For a smaller town to host something that draws that kind of crowd? That’s impressive.

James Dean Festival: Fairmount Does It Right

Fairmount leans into its connection to James Dean — and they do it well. Car shows. Parades. Carnival vibes. It’s nostalgic without feeling outdated. It feels like pride.

Fairmount is just a short 15 minute ride from Gas City! Well worth the tribe. That town shows up and shows out!

Fall Festivals and Covered Bridges

As summer fades, we don’t shut down. Smaller towns like Matthews host events like the Covered Bridge Festival. Craft vendors. Food. Music. That early fall air that makes everything feel cozy. It’s not massive. It’s charming.

Winter: We Don’t Go Quiet

Here’s the truth:

These events aren’t just things to do. They’re proof of investment -Proof of pride- Proof that people here care enough to show up. Grant County may not be enormous. But when you look at the calendar — farmers markets, First Fridays, concerts, fairs, car shows, festivals — you realize something: We don’t need to be big. We just need to be connected. And we are. That’s why we love living here.
